The Regional District of Central Kootenay, in partnership with the Ministry of Transportation, is pleased to announce a pilot project of solar powered LED bus stop lighting at its Nelson Transit and Arrow Slocan Lakes Community Service routes.
The RDCK said the lights are being installed at select bus stops along the bus routes in the North Shore (Route 10), the Slocan Valley (Route 20), and between Nelson and Castlegar (Route 99 – Kootenay Connector).
“The lights are powered by high-efficiency solar panels and will automatically illuminate from dawn to dusk,” the RDCK said.
“Transit riders can by way of a button on the bus stop flag pole activate additional downward illumination, allowing transit drivers to safely and easily see riders.”
The RDCK said installation of the lights has begun, with all lights on select bus stops set to be installed by the end of September.
“If the lighting system proves to be effective the RDCK will consider expanding the lighting system along all of its bus routes,” the RDCK said.
Nelson Transit and Arrow Slocan Lakes Community Service is part of West Kootenay Transit. The two operations service ridership six-days a week with routes to Castlegar, to connect with Trail Transit, Balfour, Slocan Valley, Nakusp and throughout the Heritage City.
West Kootenay Transit costs and decisions are shared in a joint venture between the Regional District of Central Kootenay, Regional District of Kootenay Boundary, City of Nelson and BC Transit.
