Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church donated 700 solar lights to Jumpas informal settlement residents.

The church’s president Lindsay Peters said the church donated solar lights to help prevent fires.
“The solar lights will replace candles, to avoid more burning of shacks,” he said.
Peters said the donation was part of the 67 minutes for Mandela Day.
Residents and children after receiving solar lights from Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church.
“We chose to donate the solar lights to Jumpas residents as they are the closest ones to our church. This is our way of giving back to the less fortunate,” said Peters.
The church bought the lights. They were also sponsored by the Department of Social Economic Development.
“As Mother Teresa said, you can’t feed the world. Feed one person and you feed the world. By looking after one family, you save 20 shacks,” he said.
Zanele Dube, who received a solar light, said she is grateful for the donation from the church and her life won’t be the same anymore.
“I will be able to save money for my children as I used to buy candles in order for them to study at night. I am very happy,” she said.
ANC PR councillor Alison Roberts said she would like to thank the church for the phenomenal work they do at Jumpas.
“Giving out solar lights will assist in preventing shack fires,” she said.
